Cultivating Mentorship and Camaraderie
The Kuna Kavemen Booster Club is more than just a sports program; it's a platform for fostering meaningful connections between high school athletes and their younger counterparts. Through this initiative, elementary school students, dubbed "Tribe Members," are given the opportunity to become part of the football team's inner circle. They write letters to their assigned player mentors, stand alongside them during the national anthem, and even have the chance to run out of the tunnel with the team at the start of the game. This symbiotic relationship extends beyond the field, as the high school mentors also attend their Tribe Members' events, such as sports games and piano recitals. "You see growth more than anything, right? You see these high school kids develop leadership skills and mentorship skills," says Coach Beau Smith, the driving force behind this innovative program.
Building a Sense of Community and Belonging
The Kuna Kavemen Booster Club is not just about creating individual connections; it's about cultivating a sense of community and belonging that transcends traditional boundaries. "You can just see the impact these high school kids have on elementary school kids," says Coach Smith. "We've kind of created this tribe mentality of like, you know, it's not just about this family, that family — let's build it up together."This "tribe mentality" is evident in the way the program has brought together families and fostered a sense of unity within the Kuna community. Danielle Hobbs, a Booster Club parent, has seen the positive impact on her first-grade son, who was initially shy and had difficulty making friends. "This was kind of a great way where he would have a really positive older role model, who is also almost like a big brother," she says.
Developing Character and Community Engagement
The Kuna Kavemen Booster Club's mentorship program is not just about sports; it's about cultivating well-rounded individuals who are invested in their community. Max Kettlitz, a senior at Kuna High, has found that his involvement in the program has helped him develop important character traits and prepare for his future career aspirations."It also helps create character for me. It helps me, you know, interact with the youth. My career plan, I plan on being a first-responder, so it helps me interact better with the community," says Kettlitz. This sentiment echoes Coach Smith's vision for the program, which is to see it grow to include 100 kids on the sideline, with parents lining up to get their children involved and reaping the benefits of this transformative initiative.
Fostering Confidence and Overcoming Barriers
The Kuna Kavemen Booster Club's mentorship program is not just about building relationships; it's about empowering young individuals to step out of their comfort zones and embrace new experiences. Danielle Hobbs, the parent of a first-grade Tribe Member, has witnessed this firsthand."Initially I didn't think he would run out in the tunnel but when he saw the other kids doing it, he then was excited about it and now he's just like full on: 'when am I running through the tunnel? When are we going to the football games?'" says Hobbs. This program has provided her son with the confidence and excitement to engage in activities he may have previously shied away from, opening up new avenues for personal growth and development. The Kuna Kavemen Booster Club's mentorship program is a shining example of how sports can be leveraged to build meaningful connections, foster community engagement, and empower young individuals to reach their full potential. As the program continues to grow and inspire, it serves as a model for other communities seeking to create lasting, transformative experiences for their youth.
