In a commendable effort to address food insecurity, Gleaners Community Food Bank and Kroger have joined forces once more. This partnership, entering its 13th year, encourages shoppers to contribute non-perishable goods during designated weekends. The collaboration aligns with Kroger’s ambitious Zero Hunger | Zero Waste initiative, which seeks to eradicate hunger within local communities while minimizing waste throughout the company.
Throughout January, patrons visiting select Kroger locations will encounter volunteers from Gleaners, who will distribute lists of essential items needed by those facing food shortages. These volunteers will be present on Saturdays and Sundays between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., collecting donations of boxed, canned, or plastic-packaged goods. The collection events are scheduled across several counties, including Wayne, Macomb, Oakland, Monroe, and Livingston. Notably, upcoming collections will occur on January 25 and 26 in Livingston and Monroe counties, where specific Kroger stores will serve as donation points.
By working together, these organizations aim to provide vital support to families and individuals struggling with food insecurity. Both parties emphasize the importance of community involvement in making a meaningful difference. Gerry Brisson, president and CEO of Gleaners Community Food Bank, highlighted the significance of this partnership in maintaining food supplies for agencies that may face shortages post-holiday season. Cam Barrett, corporate affairs manager at Kroger, expressed pride in the collective effort, noting that each contribution brings them closer to their goal of ensuring no one goes hungry. Last year’s campaign resulted in an impressive haul of over 205,000 pounds of food, underscoring the impact of such collaborative endeavors.
Through initiatives like these, communities can foster resilience and solidarity, addressing critical issues such as hunger. Such partnerships not only alleviate immediate needs but also inspire sustained commitment to social welfare, demonstrating the power of unity and shared responsibility in creating a better future for all.
