A fresh perspective is set to invigorate the annual playwriting workshop organized by Marfa Live Arts. This year, the organization has chosen a unique path by inviting Joe Salinas, an El Paso-based artist renowned for his storytelling and skateboarding passion, to lead the program. With a rich background in filmmaking and photography, Salinas has collaborated with prestigious entities like National Geographic and worked alongside celebrated directors such as Robert Rodriguez and Richard Linklater.
Salinas, who once called Marfa home, brings decades of experience as an actor, writer, and director. He is currently guiding high school students through an intensive week-long course that will culminate in performances of the best plays on stage in early March. "I'm excited to work with these young minds," Salinas remarked. "We'll dive right into creative projects, and I anticipate learning as much from them as they will from me." His approach diverges from conventional teaching methods, emphasizing freedom of expression and encouraging students to explore their own voices without constraints. "The goal is to make it enjoyable and liberating for everyone involved," he added.
The enduring success of this playwriting initiative over more than a decade can be attributed to its collaboration with Marfa High School and the dedication of English teachers Donel Lara and Linda Ojeda. "This partnership continues to thrive because it empowers students," Ojeda noted. "Many of our students go on to pursue higher education, and this program provides them with invaluable experiences." The key to the program's effectiveness lies in connecting students with instructors who are relatable and inspiring. "Students feel encouraged to open their minds and explore topics they are passionate about," Ojeda explained.
For Salinas, this workshop offers local youth not only a chance to discover new talents but also to envision potential careers in the performing arts. "Growing up, I never imagined I could do what I do today," he reflected. "It's important to show these kids that despite external challenges, they have the power to create and express themselves freely. When they realize they can achieve anything they set their minds to, the world opens up before them."
Ultimately, the essence of this experience revolves around community. "Marfa fosters an environment where everyone supports each other's creative endeavors," Salinas said. "I hope the students recognize the uniqueness and value of this opportunity. They are part of something truly special, and it's crucial for them to embrace and build upon it."
